Lost Kiss

I remember a girl from school
Her dark eyes always danced
She was kind to me
Even as she was being loud
She enjoyed life
In a way I envied
And I wished that she knew
How much I wanted to love her

But she did not love me
She was merely kind to me once
Kinder than she had to be
But certainly unobtainable
And not interested in a guy like me

I was foolish and shy
I did not know that that brash loudness
Hid a heart that yearned to be touched
And loved
Once we were alone and could have kissed
And I longed to
So did she
But I was afraid;
She might reject me
So I didn't
And kicked myself all night for being a coward

For years I dreamed of that kiss
Rehearsed how I should have done it
What I should have said
How I would do it again if I had the chance
I got it down perfect
Envisioned it so many times
That I began to convince myself that maybe I had
In fact,
Kissed her

Twenty years is a long time to think about one kiss
One lost kiss that never happened.

She moved away
She's doing well in Florida
She has a son
He looks just like her
And I see you're doing well
We're so proud of you
Yes, but how is Susan?
Oh, she's fine
Tell her I would love to see her again
Okay, I will.

Maybe she'll come to the reunion
Probably not
Do you know where she is?
Not exactly
But I'd really like to see her
And this time I'm going to find her
And if I have anything to say about it
She'll be there
And she'll know she's been missed

It's been twenty years since I saw you
Do you remember that date?
I've thought about it often
But I can't quite remember – did I kiss you goodnight?
No, and I've always wondered why not.
Fear.  My life was ruled by fear.
But I've learned not to let fear rule my life anymore
And if I had the chance again,
I would kiss you.
And I would let you.

There are some things that improve with age
I've learned that a kiss is one of them
The kiss I imagined could not have compared
With the kiss I experienced
Late at night
After everyone was gone
I wanted our lips to never part
I wanted to taste you forever
I wanted
I wanted
To lie back and feel the waves, the waves of emotion
Crashing onto us both
As I watched the passion and desire on your face
And tasted your lips again and again and again
Urgently needing to leave
Desperately wanting to stay
And collect all the interest
On that kiss
So much more valuable
Twenty years later
A kiss capable
Of making dark eyes dance again
Of teaching a woman
How to be a brash, loud girl again
And showing a man
The power of a kiss
And what lay inside
The heart of a woman

Wow... this certainly makes one ponder how many things are passed up in life foolishly.  Excellant poem.  Welcome to Passions.

WOW! This was great! I hope someday you get the chance to meet again. I know every now and then I think back to one and wonder, what it would have been like.
Thanks for the memories.

This is magic...a wonderful journey..I also remember a few times in my life where fear stepped in and I lost opportunities I would have loved to partake of.   So nice to get another opportunity.  James

Hmmmm... Yes, I remember a few such instances... luckily I managed to find the one that mattered most after seven years of wondering what could have been… today she's my wife and I'll never let go.  Thank you for the well written story.  Welcome to Passions.
