Loneliness, as much a part-
Of life as drawing breath....
The only reason left to live
Is my impending death...
Another town, another badge-
Another chance to die.
No son to carry on my name-
No woman who will cry.
I am not feeling sorry
For the man whoíve Iíve become
It doesnít matter what Iím called
Nor matter where Iím from.
Death is my companion-
With the rising of each sun...
It all becomes so commonplace
To those who wear the gun.
I rode with General John B. Hood-
Confederate Cavalry-
I fought because I loved my state
And not for slavery.
Till time did forge a way of life
Iím not the only one--
Who drifted West and earned their keep
By virtue of a gun.
Abilene and Ellsworth-
Fort Smith, and Dallas, too
El Paso, then to Santa Fe-
Just to name a few.
No longer is it courage-
I do not call it brave...
Perhaps itís resignation-
For each stop I leave a grave.
I really think the end is near-
My life is nearly done
I guess my kind have run their course-
We men who wear the gun.

Excellent tale and intriguing perspective, Gunslinger...and your craft is once again delivered impeccably. Really enjoyed this!

Another good story in your excellent style.
I wonder what life was like in those days when a gun was on your hip and your horse the most important thing you owned?
Thanks for the trip back!

Such an air of melancholia in your recent work, GS... but your obvious talent continues to shine..

*sigh* I wanna go home! A third generation Texan I am, even though I'm attending school in Missouri.  Texans are like no other people in the U.S, proud, bold, down to earth, and we still have that suthern hospitality that I love. Everybody I know always asks me, what is it about Texas? It's not something I can explain, but that every true Texan feels.  So, Gunslinger, thanks for this bit of home.

"Glory remains unaware of my neglected dwelling where alone
I sing my tearful song which has charms only for me."

-Charles Brugnot
