Winners?

Whoa... I was getting worried till I realized they were TRYING to write like that. LOL

from the page link--

"An international literary parody contest, the competition honors the memory if not the reputation of Victorian novelist Edward George Earl Bulwer-Lytton (1803-1873), who has just enjoyed his bicentennial. The goal of the contest is childishly simple: entrants are challenged to submit bad opening sentences to imaginary novels. Although best known for The Last Days of Pompeii (1834) and the phrase, "the pen is mightier than the sword," Bulwer-Lytton opened his novel Paul Clifford (1830) with the immortal words that the "Peanuts" beagle Snoopy plagiarized for years, "It was a dark and stormy night."

Well...from what I read...they certainly accomplished that. LOL

The cheese one scared me.

Craig:

Perhaps it could be ... a contest to see who can write the worst opening lines to a poem might be interesting.

This is a little too fun to resist:

***

“Man, this wall is cold,” I thought in puzzlement a moment before I realized that the door to the Taco Bell bathroom had taken a sudden jaunt to the ceiling.  I quickly pushed myself off the floor, in spite of the pain in my kidneys, returned to stand before the urinal, which had apparently prevailed in a recent encounter with my right cheek, and succeeded in doing what I failed to do before (and thankfully during) my unexpected “nap” on the restroom floor.  “Those 32 oz. bottles of Aquafina should have a warning label,” I thought, “DO NOT DRINK WHILE IN A PROLONGED TRAFFIC JAM.”

After adjusting my shirt (I apparently hadn’t COMPLETELY failed during my “nap”) and as I made my way out of the Taco Bell restroom with the decidedly cold floor, I thought for a moment, “Maybe I should buy something.”

As if the Fates had it in for me that day, traffic moved at a crawl for the next two hours and I thought through increasing discomfort as my neck craned vanely too give me a glimpse of the next exit, "Perhaps those re-fried beans were not such a good idea."
