sixteen and still a child herself
yet, she took the news surprisingly well
at least outwardly

Pregnant!

God!

What will I do?
My Father will kill me!
What will I do?!

on her own
after her Father's bitter rage
ragged
eyes salt-worn
from nights of endless tears

night would find her
lying in a dark corner somewhere
cradling her unborn child
and fearing for it's future
but even still she'd whisper lullabies
to her precious, precious child

"I love you so!" she'd say.

for this child was the first thing
that had ever really belonged to her

one night as the late fall snows
slipped down from heaven

God sent an Angel to a lonely heart that night

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

she saw the ragged
obviously pregnant young girl
counting dimes and nickels
at the checkout counter

curious, the elderly lady stepped closer
and watched the girl as she shivered
and re-counted her change

the girl was so tired and hopeless looking
but there was something in her manners
and in her hesitant smile
her clothes were dirty
but her hands and face shone clean and smooth
blue eyes shocking in her care worn face
light blonde hair falling over her eyes
as she carelessly brushed it away

clutching her apple and a small pack of crackers
the girl turned to leave the store
but was stopped by a gentle hand

heart racing, she turned
and looked straight into the kindest eyes
she had ever seen
the woman offered the girl a hot meal
and a place for the night
(we accidentally cooked extra,
and the snow looks like it's not stopping tonight!)

shy and afraid
the girl hesitated
but something in the woman's smile
drew her in and eased her heart

settled down in the backseat of the old Rolls
with a gentlemanly driver at the wheel
the girl felt as if she has stepped in
on someone else's dream

as they reached the genteel older home
the girl's hand cupped over her belly
impulsively protecting her unborn child

but inside
the reception was warm
and dinner, hot and waiting

ravenous
she ate more in that one meal
than she had in the last few weeks!

after a long soak in a scented tub
the girl, clean and dry and warm
for the first time in months,
was near tears with gratitude and disbelief
as she knelt near her bed in that beautiful room
and whispered a prayer to God

"Thank You for sending an Angel to me ~Amen."

in her cozy room
with a faded picture in her hand
and tears in her eyes
the elderly lady eased herself to the floor
and knelt near her bed
she too whispered a prayer that night

"Thank You for sending an Angel to me ~Amen."

"Our life, exempt from public haunt, finds tongues in trees, books in the running brooks, sermons in stones, and good in everything."

Oh my....

May your roof never fall in and those beneath it never fall out.

This is lovely...so touching. A beautiful tale of an angel told in beautiful words. Both of the ladies in that poem are angels.

Love and hugs,
Lizzie

I will add my personal Amen here.  This was so special - God sent me an Angel in the form of my son, I can totally relate to this.  Great poem, Angel.

Very, very  touching.

MAY THE ROAD RISE TO MEET YOU,
MAY THE WIND BE ALWAYS AT YOUR BACK
MAY THE SUN SHINE UPON YOUR FACE
THE RAINS FALL SOFT UPON YOUR FIELDS
AND, UNTIL WE MEET AGAIN,
MAY GOD HOLD YOU IN THE PALM OF HIS HAND

What a great poem, I know what it feels like to have an angel touch ones life, and this poem hits just the right chored in my heart.
