Henry stopped and looked up at the sky
As we went on our hike in the night.
"They twinkle like that. I wonder why."
I said, "Maybe it's just the light."
"Hmm...I dunno. It's almost as if
There's someone winking at me..."
Then he shook and grew quite stiff
As he watched the starry sea.
"What's wrong?" I asked, and he replied,
"It's nothing, just the cold."
From the look on his face I could tell he lied
Then he sighed and tried looking bold.
"A long time ago, before you were born
I was learning to fly with my sister.
She smoothed out my wings that summer morn'...
In a dive, I barely missed her...
"She smiled up at me, then told me to land.
Quite soon, that's what I did.
She patted my back and took my hand
And in it something she hid.
"She whispered to me to tell no one of this
And without a word, I obeyed.
That night after she gave me a kiss
She went to her room and I heard as she prayed.
"'Please, dear Lord, protect my child
For a very young dragon is he,
Let him live a life that's mild
And always keep faith in thee.'
"After that, I heard no more,
And soon I had shut my eyes.
I dreamed of sorrow, I wondered what for;
In the morning I found out why.
"Late that night, my sister had died
From a cancer not known til then.
All that day and the next, I cried
For I had lost both a sister...and a friend.
"The thing she had put in my hand was this,"
And he held up so I could see--
An eight-pointed star that shone with a mist
And contained its own special gleam.
"So now, when I see a star like that
I remember my sister back then."
I took him in my arms and he hugged me back
As the stars twinkled bright again.

"Twinkle, twinkle, little star,
How I wonder what you are."

I dedicate this poem to all those who lost someone to cancer, or for that matter, any illness.
I also dedicate this to those who have lost a close family member, such as a sister or brother. May they all be consoled.

You have my prayers...and my poems.

What a beautiful and heartfelt tribute LS....this is a most wonderful piece and I think my favorite of yours so far....adding the line from the nursery rhyme at the bottom was a perfect touch....
Excellent writing Little Spyro...

A soul that writes from the heart and shares it, truly gives a gift extraordinaire!

This was so beautiful.  I always enjoy poems about stars especialy when they are in tribute to someone who has lost their life to a disease such as cancer.
Someone pass a tissue please, I think I feel a tear forming.

With a tear in his ancient eyes
The great Dragon proclaimed aloud
For all dragons around to hear
"This Dragon's kid makes me feel proud".

Are you sure you're only 14? You are wise beyond your age, my friend. Very touching.

Don't ask me why I brought this back up to the top, it's just a feeling that...well, I don't like to say it, but I think someone's going to want to read it...

Little dragon how beautifully you write.   Full of saddness but the essence of the poem is love and, love is very powerful indeed.

Sam,

This is really wonderful.

This was origially posted on the day I entered the forums and not long after you began. I'm amazed at how well you wrote in the begining. I'm glad you brought it back.

I lost an uncle to cancer last year and I know that poetry was one of the best ways to work it out. I like the way this poem handles the issue of losing somebody to that disease. For me the event was not so gentle. Thanks for showing this side of losing a loved one to such an ugly disease.

To my cute lil purple dragon,

A little more than chance that we met on Jan 29th! The magic was sparked that night!

sigh...well, actually it's kinda strange how you brought this up to the top again today...
I don't know if it's a coincidence, but I was going to do the same...

A little while ago my friend's relative...ah...I reall don't like saying it, but I think you know what I mean...

He's having a difficult time, and I just want anyone who read this to keep him in your prayers.

Thanks...

So inspiring and filled with love. Your words brought tears to my eyes and the ending...
"I took him in my arms and he hugged me back
As the stars twinkled bright again."

Awesome,
