This was written in church when dealing with a warring within me over accepting, comfortably, the heart toward God of a young person whose body had been 'violated' with markings, permanent markings that she'd not been born with.  This was a step beyond hairstyle and make-up.  Well, I'm over fifty, which is way over 30 ;o}

What Vessels?
Virginia Salter

a day of celebration
that God is alive
and in all of His creation

a day to praise His name
with shouts and singing
to laud Him above all

in what vessels does His Spirit live?
might they be only the finest-
those of pure white, edged in gold?

or might His vessels reflect
His entry into the Holy city
on el burro, humbly clad

might they be earthen vessels
tarnished, stained, cracked
unlovely to view on the outside

what should we seek to regale?
beauty, glamour, precious gems,
perchance eyes with souls filled with Him

His children stand before me
professing full His love
yet merely human, mundanely togged

one has marked her body
pierced with ink, for all time,
a conundrum to see past her tattoo

help me see beyond her choice,
to Whom she chooses to confess
in the cross twined with vine
on the place where wings might rest

Dear Vas.  Your poem is a wonderful reminder to all of us.  I too am slow to accept these physical changes that young people put on to their God given bodies.  I am much older than you and so probably even more set in stone.  My Dad wonderful man that he was did notwant us to use makeup or pierce our ears.  We slowly won him over, I guess but probably caused him heartache also. But it is a shame.  Now in youth they are naturally so beautiful.  Love Joyce

I know exactly what you are saying here and can appreciate your feelings.  We know several young people, with God in their hearts and yet they chose such bizarre ways of "decorating" themselves.  It's painful to see them trying to be "different" and yet they are so much alike. I know God can see what is in their hearts and beyond the facade.

So true, yet we have to remember...  WWJD.
This is such a good reminder, thank you for writing.

I, too, am from the old school. :-) I want to cry when I see sweet young gals in provocative clothing, both sexes covered with tatoos, pink, green or blue hair, pierced tongues, etc.  It was once hard to look beyond long hair boys wore, then more and more bizare fads came about.  Your writing is a great reminder to look beyond, as many are doing these things in efforts to hide their inner brokeness.  Thank you.

I personally don't believe God wants us to tattoo ourselves, but I'm all for Maybelline!!!  Seriously though, this IS a reminder to all of us to do the best
with what we have, for we are not only vessels, we are temples of the Holy Spirit and He dwells in all believers.  I thank you for this one. (I'm 51 in May,

Your peom reminds me that I have three step-brothers all over 50 who each at a young age had a devil tattooed on their arm which read, "Born to Raise Hell."  I guess there is really no new thing under the sun?  This stuff was going on way before Christ walked on the earth.....  Yes, what is important is the condition of one's heart.  Two of my brothers have recently accepted Christ as their personal Savior and one has what he calls an understanding with God.... I praise God that tattoos and body piercing has and will never keep God or His from reaching the hearts of those who He loves.  Bob <><

Sometimes it is hard to look beyond what's on the outside. We have to remember God judges from what's on the inside, not outward appearances.

He came not to the righteous, but to the sinners. If this person was in church, then they were there for the Lord.

So many times we tend to look down upon people because they don't meet our standards, but rest assured they're all children of God, and He loves each one no matter what they look like.

What a great reminder this is to all of us!
