Dueling Anniversaries By Larry Chadwick
I don’t expect I’ll ever forget shopping for groceries at Apple Valley on March 17, 1986. I was getting things for myself and my fifteen year old son. We had only been in town for just over a month. We didn’t yet know our way around real well. It was the back of the store and I was crossing by the delicatessen to pick up a gallon of milk. The workers behind the high counter were engaged in cheerful banter when the blonde turned with a beautiful smile and just for a moment her sparkling eyes met mine. My heart skipped a beat and I completed my shopping. With minimal inquiry I discovered that she was single.
It was a quick trip home. With eager anticipation I shared the experience with my mother and pressed her about the need to go do some grocery shopping of her own. She confessed a need for a few items and I persuaded her to get them now. So I tagged along talking nonstop about the woman I had seen at the store. Of course she needed milk first. Before we went by the delicatessen we paused as I pointed her out. As we left the store with her purchases I still remember mom saying “But son, looks aren’t everything.”
“But mom,” I persisted, “if she has looks and character then I have it all.”
We were married on July 4, 1987. I’m still not sure which anniversary I enjoy more. Oh, and yes she had it all.

If tears could build a stairway and memories a lane, I'd walk right up to heaven and bring you home again.
