That place with padded walls and funny people in white.........

The students at Crestwood High School watched in amusement as the weird girl strolled down the hall. She had her arm circled about nothing as if there is a person there, and was talking to the same person that was invisible to the rest of the students. She often pet animals that are not really there, and passed notes to empty desks in classes. She ate lunch alone, yet was always deeply engrossed in conversation. She shared her food with empty seats.

But Andrea knew she was not crazy like her peers said she was. She was walking down the hall with her prince, Kory. Beside him there was a golden unicorn with an onyx mane and tail, and a silver horn. She had many other friends in the school. The sorcerer, Taemesuom, worked with the witch, Amber, causing those little twists of fate, like falling and dropping all your books down the stairs, or spilling pop on oneself in lunch. The dragon, Onrefni, usually raged his fury in the gym, blowing fire to make it so hot and throwing balls across the room with his mighty tail. Andrea knew.

But it hurt to be made fun of. The only way she could find solace was to hide in Kory’s arms, to confide in Taemesuom, to drink Amber’s tea that uplifted the soul. She would feed Delilah, the unicorn, sugar cubes between classes, and laugh with Onrefni when he slammed a ball with such force it broke a girl’s nails when she tried to catch it. Her only friends were the ones the other kids couldn’t see. And she knew that they were real- she KNEW.

One day, outside of math class, she was hugging Kory, closing off the rest of the world by hiding her face in his arms. And then a ridiculing mob surrounded them. They were laughing, and shouting insults….

Andrea knew that they were just afraid of her because she was different. They couldn’t believe in her friends, the ones often considered imaginary by humanity. They couldn’t believe in something they had never seen, and they couldn’t see anything they didn’t believe in. They were blind to everything but what they had been taught was true.

As long as she had Kory, it would be ok…..

Then, to Andrea’s horrified eyes, Kory began to fade from her view. As he became translucent, the last expression she saw on his face was bewilderment, perhaps by the way she was staring, horrified, at the place he had been. She knew, then. She WAS crazy. Her friends WERE imaginary. Kory- Kory was gone…….

Andrea always carried a pocket knife for protection. She withdrew it from her pocket, and extracted the blade. The students closest to her backed away, screaming. She put the point of the six-inch blade in the hollow of her throat, and let herself fall forward. In a split-second, with a splash of blood, it was over. The lie was over.

The students watched, silenced, as a crimson puddle spread about their feet. Then, to their utter amazement, a strange young man materialized out of thin air. He had tears streaming down his face. He kneeled down by Andrea, rolled her over, and kissed her forehead. He removed the knife from her throat, and sliced open both of his wrists.

“Look at what you’ve done,” Kory said. “Because of your ignorance, my angel is dead, as I will soon be.” More blood steadily dripped onto the floor. “You are all guilty of murder.” With that he passed out, the last of his life draining out of him.

The group went into a frenzy. Some of them were so humbled by what had just happened, so confused, they could only sob, or fall to the floor, their legs turned to noodles. Then the police and paramedics arrived. The kids screamed insanely, “help him, save him!” One of the paramedics shook his head. “There’s nothing we can do for her.”

The group went into an uproar. People were screaming things like “No, not her!”, “Help him, the guy with the slit wrists!”, “He’s still breathing!”

The paramedics, police, and administrators of the school all looked for an injured male student- all they saw was a dead girl, one who had always been mentally instable, and a group of children who now seemed even more insane than Andrea had been.
