The Secret to Happiness

Today, one of my students came into my office to ask a simple question. “You’re a happy person, right? How do you do that?” His 17-year-old eyes gazed into mine, searching for some words of wisdom, seeking understanding at the peace that eludes him. It gave me pause to think. I had never thought about it before. Being happy wasn’t something I’d really considered, it was just something I’d done. But I knew that answer wouldn’t appease him. He had asked a valid question and deserved a valid answer.

What is happiness? It’s finding laughter in tears, delight in every day miracles. It’s finding perfection in a butterfly. It’s looking at Oklahoma (flat and plain though it is) and seeing God’s canvas. Happiness is a decision you make, not just something that you feel. It’s making the conscious effort to find the good in all things, to discover the humanity in those around us.

Happiness is opening yourself up to the possibilities that life has to offer. Seeing things, not only with your eyes, but also with your heart. Looking into a person’s soul and seeing them for who they truly are, not just who they wish they were. It’s pondering your place in the universe and realizing it’s anywhere you want it to be.

It's the warm summer breeze, blowing on your face, and it's the heart felt words of a caring person!

I agree, happiness is where you find it.
Thank you for sharing some with me!
