It's the last dance.
They've dimmed the lights and started the music. In just one song this night will be over. Now is our last chance.
I stand with my back to the wall, pretending to be engrossed in a spot on my dress but secretly watching your every move out of the corner of my eye. Closing my eyes, I utter a quick prayer that you'll notice me and suddenly feel the way you did before. But as I open my eyes you're walking away, to another girl that has caught your eye. My heart breaks with disappointment, and I can see the lights and decorations and dancing people around me blur through my tears. A memory, deep below the surface, rises slowly. The scene changes. I am at a different party, with you by my side. We laugh and talk with the friends that surround us. Your smile lights up the room, and fills me to overflowing with happiness. My hand rests gently on your shoulder and your arm fits perfectly around my waist We are perfectly together, sharing each other's warmth and comfort, without another care in the world. Then the lights dim and soft music begins to play. Without saying a word, you lead me outside to the deck. We are alone. Just us and the star's of a summer's eve. Resting my head on your shoulder, we glide to the music, moving as one. Lulled by the sweet melody and the steady rise and fall of your chest beneath me, I close my eyes and inhale deeply the smells of you and the air around us, thick with the scent of nearby blossoms. Then the music slowly comes to a halt and all is quiet outside. Gently, you raise my face to yours and our lips meet in the sweetest kiss I have ever recieved. Nothing matters but you and me.
But then the memory ends, slipping away like sand through my fingers. I see you dancing with another girl in your arms, a girl who is not me. Not a single look you send in my direction until the music ends. Then, finally, you turn to me and our eyes meet. But you quickly look away and all I am left with is my sorrow, and a sick feeling of emptiness in the pit of my soul.
