Behold sad Drogheda's stone tower,
Lone witness of Eire's dark hour.
When Cromwell laid siege
Lord Death was his liege
And sorrow was Ireland's dower.

Jim,
I'm not sure if I should commend you on your experimentation or hit you over the head with the same things I always say: why this particular topic/form combination? A limerick is a comic style and the topic is anything but comic (am I missing something?).

Is it possible to do something like this?  Well, anything's possible -- but I would suggest reworking the poem one way or the other perhaps in a more ironic direction.  Right now, you've set up the reader's expectation and it doesn't quite satisfy.

For me, that is.

Brad:

You can do both, if you like.  I chose the limerick format because of its "Irish" sound.  I thought that it may have lent to a short poem's overall effect.  Perhaps I was wrong.

Drogheda is a town in NE Ireland that was besieged by Oliver Cromwell, head of English Parliament, shortly after the Irish regained control of Ulster (now Northern Ireland)in the 1600's.  Cromwell's Ironsides took no prisoners and all of the men, women and children in the city were killed.

Perhaps the format was more distracting than complimentary.  I will try to rework it a bit.  Thanks for the reply.

I just wanted to add that I could be wrong on this one.  The villanelle used to be a comic form as well but in this century has been turned productively into a serious form.

It's just hard for me not to remember certain drinking songs when I read this.
