I was always
a reluctant bystander
if I couldn't be the one
"they" were looking at
I refused to play the game

I never took one sip
of the broth of free will
no, I drank with gusto
from the cellars' vat
of fermented independence

I leapt into onrushing rapids of
the river of life
allowing it to sweep me up
into life's litter
along the river's trashy banks

I found myself again and again
awash in melancholy
trying to tough it out when
loving was called for
that which I knew not enough of

so here I am
happy at last
who'd believe it
who'd understand
I would
I do

Great write here, Jerry.
When you can explain your exact emotion this well, well what more can be said.

I know that's a truism if I've ever heard one, Karen, and I have found it. Thank you for your input this morning.

Good write, Jerry! I do believe none of us initially know enough about love.  However, those willing to learn do learn though perhaps through trial and tribulation. At the end of the day I guess it doesn't really matter how it comes about.

Good Morning Helen. No, it doesn't matter how long it takes, or what route you plodded down to get there, if you can find love, even in your declining years is nothing but a plus in the book of life. Thank you for being here.

I'm still trying to understand it myself, but once you have it everything seems complete if only a little bit. The poem was wonderful, I'm very happy for you.

By having everything, Ken, to me means being satisfied with who you are, not necessarily who you were. I am satisfied with me.

Jerry
Marvelous metaphors you've used here to describe your journey to mellowland.
Great writing.

Wonderful, Martie, that makes me even happier. You sent me something in Facebook and I deleted it before I read it. Want to send it again? But if I have to join anything I don't do that at Facebook. Sorry.
