"You stood before me like a thought,
A dream remembered in a dream"
Samuel Taylor Coleridge-from "Recollections of love" 1817

*Blueberry Water

In lucid dreams, duality speaks:
By time delete, the bones of real
Fade pale, to brittle white and
Grayer shades..yet still they glow
Sometimes at night.

Once by that device
Adolescence gained its old appearance-
My teens came back renewed by light
That shines from place of somewhere
Seeming gone, but really only hides.

Came back in a dream, inside a bubble,
Where I sat by my first lover, in August-
Summer, next to clear, cold flowing,
Blueberry water.

So transfixed, I took a second look;

Fog was rising up
From two who shared a rock,
And rays of sun on tan-young flesh,
That dried their dripping skin,
Made wet by skinny-dipping fun.

Without a thought of shame or sin
A boy-hand cupped a soft-wet breast;
(She had started to redress)
But he could see a darkling blotch
Through silk, where thin-legs
Made congress.

And then their tongues took tour
Around the harbor of soft lips;
Attention, and touching
Raised the ships mast,
And aboard that Galleon
In-good-sailing wind,
Both of their sails-were set..

Towards uncharted destination,
Separate--places
Of nothing in their dreams,

Where feet would walk, and hearts would beat
And pace on journeys that each future takes;
Each and each, on very different paths.

That past renewed to here and now,
Was very far from blueberry water
And love by touch, that both had shared;
I remember us, using each other
Without thought of what-might happen
Without care, or adult bother.

The liquid that wended, over rock solid bottom
Flowed through my mind, like time over matter,
Until all of my visions manuvered the corner
Of barely awake, and wondering avenue;
That met a deadend in the alley of thoughts--

Does she ever dream that day?
If so,
Does she see the scene shown me?

Is she a lucid dreamer?,

That wakes, and smiles
Then turns away
For just a moment-
To hide the why
Of memory grin,
From the eyes of her lover?

* "Blueberry Water"
Refers to a deep flowing mountain stream (stony fork creek) in Tioga county, Pennsylvania. "Blueberry" is the local name for a swimming hole on that stream.
It is a real place...If you like, go here for a picture of it.

A very exciting trip you have taken us on with this gem, Ice. There is nothing in the world like that first lover. There will be more pleasurable lovers in the future, but nothing will ever take the place of that very first skin-to-sin feeling. Does she think of that time? Probably. Does she have the same thoughts as do you? Probably not. She will have her own wonderful feelings remembered, just as vibrant and fantastic as are yours were, but from her own point of view. Excellent writing, Sir!

P.S.: Great photo . . .

I would say,  yes... she softly smiles in her memories
of Blueberry Water. Such a beautiful poem, so caring and loving of a tender moment in time, Ice.

The poem was a gateway to you past and the picture was as wonderful as poetry. I was truly drawn in and could see and feel my own first kiss. Simply enjoyed.

Perhaps you are right, Jerry...Maybe she remembers , but remembers differently

Thank you for reading, and the reply.

Ms. E

Thank you for your second reply, the poem does seem smoother.

I think I'll keep this version, maybe gently tweak it in a few places.

Thank you...I am happy to hear it stirred old emotions,

I was the reason it was written.

Much enjoyed, my friend...very cool (a warm kind of "cool") write - especially liked the lines
"...Adolescence gained its old appearance-
My teens came back renewed by light
That shines from place of somewhere
Seeming gone, but really only hides..."

Loved your delightful romantic poetic ponderings, dear Ford. What a fantastic setting for a first love  and its strong emotions ... to be remembered forever, no doubt about that!

I looked at the picture first and got somehow lost in it ... , then your words completed the "experience" and made it a very pleasurable visual and reading event.

This makes me wish I had such a great memory to grin about instead of the quite forgettable reality. LOL Beautiful write!

Ford....

you had me holding my breath, as if I had been captured 'neath some microscopic device, being watched back in 1962...

Whooo....

this is a

for when I need to revisit a first time.

This, again, is testament to why I read your poetry.  You never disappoint me, Ford.  I feel often enough, that I'm drawn to what you write, because it is never something that I can re-experience my life through.  It is as if I'm re-living a parallel nostalgia that is not my own, and has always escaped me.  I can vicariously enjoy the trappings of youth, the awkward and wonderful coltish-ness of it, through what you write.  It is the things of favorite stories, and memories.
