You’ll find in every dungeon-
A wall of infamy…
Names and dates of passage,
Inscribed for all to see.

The passion of we humans-
To make our mark on time:
Chiseled On a wall of stone,
Composed in lines of rhyme.

What is the message? One may ask.
It is merely: “I was here!
I lived, I thought, I had my dreams-
Before I disappeared.

I loved my women, fought my wars-
Left tracks upon the land…
I lived! I died! Remember me!
A woman or a man.

I had my hopes, knew joy or pain-
Knew victory and fear…
The message that I wish to leave?
A thinking soul was here!”

I guess if it weren't for the dreamers and the seekers we would know nothing of the past. I love this poem. Makes me want to go out and carve a poem into a stone. Preferably not in a dungeon.

Ah, this rings the bell of truth... that innate passion to somehow leave a mark of our passing upon this earth.  Not sure what causes it but I surely have felt it inside of me, screaming at times.  Never fear Gunslinger... you have certainly left your mark on the many hearts who have experienced the joy and pain of your poetry.

John, I hope we will have many more years of you and your poetry, yet.  You have hit the nail on the head - that is what we all want more than anything else - validation for our existence while we are here and to be remembered for whatever reason after we are gone.  Yes, there are other things that we wish for, but that is is the primary one.  Well done!  I enjoy your philosophical poetry very much.

You will certainly leave the message of a thinking soul... I can only hope I do as well! But I hope both of us add many more messages before we disappear. Excellent write!
