hurrying down a rain-slicked street
hurrying because its ladies' night
jukebox alley
night of getting drunk
smoking cancer sticks
scoring time
it’s a cold night
rain goes between my collar and my skin
damn!
street is dark
too young and cocky to be afraid
sit down at the bar
fire up a Lucky
get a Beam and water; dash of bitters
survey the pickings
there's a few glancing my way
start feeding the jukebox
being sure my make-out songs are playing
making the round dancing with the chicks
picking and choosing
don't want no fluff, like 'em hard to get
ones I cull I let cigarette ash drop on their shoulder
they know
getting close to last call
put up or shut up hour
trying to determine reality from Alice in Wonderland time
kinda wish I hadn't been so choosy
ah, there she is
giving me that look
one that says I'll help you stain your mattress
this is the time
yea or nay
I nod, she nods back
as I wobbly escort her out of the club
I notice cigarette ashes
someone had dropped on her shoulder

There you are, Jerry, in that groove again..
Down, dirty, and most importantly.. real!

Or maybe most importantly, is you have survived these kinds of nights, and are wise enough to explain their details, in perhaps a didactic way...perhaps a young man, bent on this same type of path will read this, and it will change his view of life.

Nahhh, I don't think so...but at least you tried.

Thanks, Ice. Yes,  I survived many of these nights. Like you I doubt my writing of the street life I lived for so long will deter another from following in my footsteps. Still . . . There is that chance.

Hi, and good morning, Baby Girl, thank you for taking the time to stop and read my scribblings and the commenting on them. I very much appreciate it.

so much a part of our lives...when we're young we fail to see the complete bigger picture...but it served us good times, some bad and a whole lot of knowledge...

well done

Appreciate the comments, LeeJ, and yes, it;s that old saying coming to play, "Youth is wasted on the young."

I'm glad I survived too, Lori, but that kinda goes without saying. But I said it anyway. That's silly, huh? Heehee

Yeah, I am glad you survived too, to tell the story of many.
How, in youth, caution is thrown to the wind, and how close we
might have come to being a statistic and didn’t know it.  Darn, it’s good
to have history (his story).  Thanks for the reminder.  Nice read.

Lol... And you call yourself old.  This proves your not... These days are so far behind me I'm not old, I'm ancient. Some good memories back there still, however.  Thanks for stirring them.
