There is
Something odd
About the happy man
About to lose his arm

Yet there
He brightly
Bandaged stands
His captured
German helmet on
The captioned question
Are we downhearted
Answered with
A resounding
No

One must imagine
Being at the Somme
Death the rats among
Remains of men
Sights the sounds
The smells

To share his joy
As once it was
At that moment
To realize

The doctor’s verdict
Had just certified
His ticket out of Hell

Thank you

This poem arose because of a picture in a book
“Over the Top” by Arthur Guy Empey published
in 1917 which I picked up in an antique shop
outside of Waukegan, Illinois for I think a dollar

Thanks again

John
