There’s so much I don’t know,
So many people I’ve never heard of;
Geese! Where have I been!

Maxine Sullivan, while watching
A video at the clubhouse gym,
I heard her sing for the first time today.

She was so beautiful, and that soft, sultry voice---
It grooved me! 1911 – 1987, before my time, yet
In the midst of my time---68, and still learning!

It is good to be alive, to have touched the big brass
Whistle of the Titanic with my trembling fingertips,
Here, in the 21st Century, and to bow my head

Before a dinner plate, and a glass of wine, and
To look back, and then forward, without fear,
But a heart still throbbing with a zest for life!

Two things are competing here: Maxine Sullivan, and the Titanic artifacts exhibit in Las Vegas. I look to Ms. Sullivan, and to all of the souls that went down into the deep the year after her birth. Life is so varied, so sweet, so sad, and so humbling, and as Matthew Arnold said, so  beautiful, and so new.

Yo Art,

This is very good.  It kind of took me back to Western PA.

Hey, Bobby, thanks! I've been away for a couple of days, but it's good to be back. I'll be catching up on reading poems today -- have a good one, my friend!

I discover new things everyday, Art, and appreciate each and every one. There are so many things to learn about and yet I hear people complain about being bored.

Thanks, Ida. As you know, from a previous discussion, I visited the Titanic exhibit, and was so moved by what I saw and felt. It wasn't so much about the great ship, but the people. To have seen clothing, shoes, and other belongings brought up from the deep and darkest depths, really touched me in a way I'll always remember, and my mind somehow associated the proximity of Maxine Sullivan's birth and the year of the Titanic tragedy, and from there this little poem emerged.

I love the way you have elaborated your emotions here, dear Art. We never stop to learn new things, that's indeed so very exciting, even though we are continuously confronted with sad events and memories.

Very good work.

Love,

Thank you kindly, Margherita. As I pointed out to Ida, it is sometimes strange how things converge so unexpectedly. I had recently paid a visit to the Titanic Artifacts Exhibit, and it touched me so deeply, and when I heard this lady sing for the first time, just the fact that she was born near the time of the Titanic disaster moved me to write a poem that was a fusion of the two events. Such is the marvel of poetry.

Thanks again --

I can't think of a better reason for a heartthrob...unless it be two, together.  I, too, find as the years progress, I know less and less.  It becomes one day at a time.

I sure hope you get off of this pessimistic kick and start writing some positive poetry!

An enjoyable read.  Like the feel. I get the same way with music. There is so much out there that I've never heard... and unfortunately, so much I'll never hear. But I'll keep picking up that odd record or CD in the hopes that I'll find that next great piece of sound.  Peace.

I wonder how many times (as we wade through life) that each of us will stop and ask, "Where have I been!"  Very nicely done.
