The old men stand proud
before the scattered crowd.
The battered warriors
of half-forgotten wars.
With trembling hands
they salute the flag.
and recall their youth
lost on foreign shores,

A marching band plays
and speeches are made
on this solemn day of remembrance.
Some reflect on the victories
but most remember the loses
and grieve for those who lie
beneath the miles of white crosses.

Pardon the formalistic remark, but I really love clever rhymes that build word associations.  "Losses" with "Crosses," "Wars" with "Shores," that's really strong.  You see shores and wonder if people have ever died there, see crosses and know what they often represent.

Lovely poem, not much else to say.  You really are a talented poet.

Just so, dear Ida. Powerful poetic message.
