.

Eventually
This is all one has
Of the long strong column
Sweating down the road

The captain in front
With a cane he doesn't need
Sounds of boots
Their dusty notes in unison

A short time sergeant
Staying out of the sun

Watching
Man by man
Marching on

Mile by mile
Through the tiger hour

When I was done reading this I felt like I was missing something, so I read it again, and that line right at the start - "this is all one has" - assured me that I'd understood the poem after all.

I have to figure out what it is, maybe it isn't anything?  Reminds me a little of Ezra Pound.  Then again, maybe that's just because you kind of look like him.

This kind of poetry isn't normally my cup of tea but I enjoy this one.  Threw me for a loop.  Thanks for sharing and I'm glad I got the chance to read it.
