I hadn't even noticed that this was your first post (just came in because of the title) and I have been truly glad that I did. Your ending packs a powerful punch to an excellent write...my favorite lines being:

Alas and drat! These days, unfortunately come more often than not it seems. While out there on that beach, take a look around. Might see something worth a second look. Press on. Try not to look back, which I realize is difficult to do.
