I wonder what the moon would say-
If it could speak tonight?
Would it commend the lives we live
Beneath it's gentle light?

Would it be pleased to testify-
Of things it did behold?
On beaches, or in abatoirs-
Beneath it's rays of gold?

Would it applaud the lies oft told
To maidens by their beaus-
Or hide it's face from bitter tears
Of lovers and their woes?

If it could speak what would it say-
To what you do tonight?
Dost enter into lasting love?
Beneath it's ancient sight?

Perchance tis pleasure which you seek
With no thought to the cost-
Of bitterness which it will bring
When innocence is lost?

Oh, please, take heed, to these my words-
Ere heartache you do wreak-
And think what words would sally forth-
If, but the moon could speak.

Way to go with the romantic tone of this piece.

This is such a romantic poem. The love is in the air tonight. LOL Made me think of the song from "The Lion King".

"Would it applaud the lies oft told / To maidens by their beaus-"

Reminds me of the movie 'Lonesome Dove' when Robert Duvall's character told a young cowboy, "If you won't lie for a poke, you don't want it bad enough."

The poem as a whole set the moon up as judging the human race. Some say this is a romantic poem, I just don't see it that way. Good writing whatever the reader culls from it.

I see this beautiful, imaginative poem as neither romantic nor judgemental at all. I see it as gentle, kind, regretful - inspiring the human race to be gentle and kind to each other and not to do anything hurtful that one would regret. Another lovely one - one of your very best, John.

Ah, but even the moon has a dark side. I'd rather not think about what the moon has witnessed Very thought provoking. Enjoyed.
