I made my own decisions,
Back when I was young.
The place I felt the most at home,
Was where my hat was hung.

Sleeping by the roadside,
‘Neath a canopy of stars-
Or standing by my saddle,
As I cussed the passing cars.

Rodeo and roaming-
Seem to travel hand in hand.
From the mountains of Montana-
To the Arizona sand…

From the California deserts-
To the central Texas hills.
I rode my share of rough-stock,
I took my share of spills:

But now my youth’s forsook me-
My hair has turned to gray.
I’ve learned many hard earned lessons
Somewhere along the way.

I’ve reminisced and romanced-
My memories, you bet!
And many times I’ve told myself:
Hey, hoss, you’ve no regrets!

I wish that that was honest-
But the gospel truth, you see,
Is, if I could do it over-
I would do things differently.

Instead of all the roaming-
I’d most likely settle down.
It would probably be kind of nice,
To have a wife around.

Instead of all the foolish things,
I messed around and did-
I think it might be kind of fun,
To spend time with a kid.

Instead of spending evenings-
With my faded photographs.
Thinking about my old friends,
I either cry or laugh.

But Rodeo you drew me-
With that lying siren call.
And like a lot of men before me,
You can plant me where I fall.

I think that you show us inside the life of the cowboy.  It's a pretty special thing to see.  I admire your ability to tell a story in a poem - and I feel my heart tug when you reflect as you did in this poem.

Thank you.
Alison
