I spent one long, hot summer,
when I was about ten,
studying ants
for hours on end.

Two ant hills...
one with black ants,
one with red.
All summer long
I watched them
gather food, go to war,
and bury their dead.
I saw them working everyday
to prepare for
the harsh, Colorado winter ahead
and I must say,
I still have a grudging respect
for those industrious little pests.

My dear Ida Belle, the strong powers of observation that you had as a young girl, continue to serve you well as a very fine poet!

I, too, used to study ants and was amazed at their strength, ingenuity, and tenacity! Perhaps I'll ask to come back as an ant! lol

You are a delightful poet, Delightful One!

I sure enjoy the way you write, Ida. I remember when I was about 10, I climbed up on a dirt hill. It turned out to be full of little tiny any, which got all over me. I never did climb up on a dirt hill again. LOL! Those little tiny red ants sure did hurt.

Ah, yeah!  Those industrious and marvelous little creatures plague my kitchen every spring.  Only the ones I get are tiny, but simply amazing as they march across the formica counter tops.  I have to get rid of them, but always think about their diligence and hard work with grudging respect, too.

Really enjoyed reading this, Ida.  You leave me smiling.  hugs!

A very interesting story about the ants dear Ida. The way they live and conduct

their affairs is nothing short of amazing,
and very intrigueing as well. love.

Good job on your poem.  You live in Colorado, or did at one point?  I live there hehe.

Beautifully captured.

As most of us have, I used to study ants as well.

Except I was more interested in setting up fights between different ant colonies.

Yes those hard working little buggers. Always somewhere to go, things to do. Never did they ever want to stop and talk to me when I was little boy and curious. So I just burned them with my dads magnifying glass. lol thanks for the memories.

Ida,

A very interesting poem you've written, and written so well!  I think you must have been a precocious child to study those little pests!  Loved this!

Did they really bury their dead?  After the battles?  That's amazing.  I'd love to watch ant hills like that -

Yes, they did Alison, they had a funeral, of sorts, where a long line of ants carried the dead. They are truly amazing creatures.

Wow, dear Ida! Burying their dead! Isn't it amazing?!

I have also always loved observing them. They carry incredible weights for their tiny structure i.e. and they do help and assist each other when there is a problem.

Enjoyed this much.

Love,
Margherita

Ants always fascinates me, remember that ant and the grasshopper story so very well from my little kindergarten days. Such tiny creatures with such high moral values, something we humans fail to follow. Wonderful write Ida…

Marchmadness,

This is a neat one.  It always amazed me how they could lift so much more than their weight.  Is it a hundred times their weight they can lift?  I don't remember, but it is a lot.  I can see how we might be envious of the little pests.

Both survived, Paul and went on living, fighting and dying just like we do.
