Fingering Love

It seems that my fingers
use to be as busy as my mind,
in ways only mothers
understand.

So, regardless if she were dressing
for an infrequent evening out,
or if we were day-busy
folding towels or other laundry
just in from sun and wind,

if my thoughts were elsewhere,
she would go to the cigar box
of treasures,
remove her beads, and say,
here, add to them, or

make the necklace shorter for me,
and when you are done,
we shall have tea.

With dollies three, I would sit, and count,
popping beads to lengthen strands
to touch her breast,
or choke her neck in the delicious
color of her eyes,
my only link to knowing
I was really hers, all along…

and in some way, they must have become
akin to a rosary, and if that is sacrilegious, then
a talisman, connecting
mother, to me…

for I remember counting dreams to bead,
beads to thoughts, thoughts of
how I might become
as good as she, then shaking my curls
in her sunshine, even as she made impossibilities
seem…possible

I hope they are somewhere safe now, if not
in some wayside antique store,
then in a cigar box,
wrapped in white tissue,
awaiting a mother’s amusement,
as she slips her hand along her daughter’s tresses,
patting her back, saying,

here, add to them,
make the necklace shorter for me,
and when you are done,
we shall have tea.

Karilea, I love this for fifty million reasons!  You are an artist of the highest calibre and even more of a precious gem than your poem!

How often are we caught up in the fond memories of yesterday yet it it those wistfully remembered yesterdays that become the golden tomorrows as this poem so eloquently shows.

Dear Karilea, I love the presentation, the color, and the words that have such an inimitable touch of grace.

Just wonderful.

Sissie....I love the way of the beads and more, the old cigar box that held such treasure.  I kept my butterfly collection in one.  There is so much love in this memory.

Affection, like pearls, build an endless strand through time and memory.
Enjoyed so much Karilea.

I must agree....this touches and brings
back thoughts of another day and year...
perhaps it was a fishing lure, or maybe
a cherished hunting knife...guy things...
but so similar the emotion,  even when
unspoken but most certainly felt!
