A Poet's Hand
by Linda L. Dowd

In darkest hours, whilst all be still,
A poet's hand, dost reach for quill.
~ Pondering thoughts, on which to write,
Upon the parchment by lantern lite.

Words doth flow from quiet mind,
~ Each mot a treasured, poetís find.
The quill becomes an artistís brush,
As scenes are painted in vivid blush.

Messages flow from ancient sages,
~ Imparting wisdom thru' out the ages.
A poet's hand oft' times be guided,
By mind and heart ~ with soul abided.

Perhaps Ďtis pain that does inspire,
~ Or passion that dost stir the fire.
The source mightst be a sign Divine,
As to how all Life dost intertwine.

In darkest hours, whilst all be still,
A poet's hand, dost reach for quill
~ Pondering thoughts, on which to write
Upon the parchment by lantern lite.

~

A grand-fine response to that (now rather 'ancient') 'poetic challenge!' ...

I LOVE all of it, but particularly the beginning (and ending)...plus:

"Words doth flow from quiet mind,
~ Each mot a treasured, poetís find.
The quill becomes an artistís brush,
As scenes are painted in vivid blush."

[and, the two Roberts (Burns and Frost) are
most assuredly, near the top of my 'poetic
  heroes' queue!]

v. serious and long-sustained applause
[another of those 'poetic standing ovations']
  for this 'penning!'

Earth Angel,

I donít know what the challenge was.  If it was to throw in antiquated words, or write in the style of Robert Burns, then this would work nicely.

Wonderful, dearest Angelo Terrestre! In the still of the night, inspiration encounters less obstacles in its flow from ... the Divine Source, I agree!

Well, that is certainly the sort of reply that makes me sit up and take notice! Thank you, Sir Bruce!

A curious aside for you ~ 2 of my 5th great grandfathers were dear friends of Robby Burns and they were pallbearers at his funeral. The daughter of one married the son of the other and their great grandson was my great , great grandfather and when he died, the young poet Robert Service attended his funeral while he was visiting in Scotland.

This is a terrific challenge and I am enjoying reading the offerings of other poets.

To paraphrase what an old family friend once said, "The best laid plans of mice and men, are often gone astray." winky wink

WOW!, This really describes a poet in many ways !-- I love this post so much because it speaks volume that you know what a poet is to the heart.

I love the part I chose because It is such old fashion, and gave us such a good picture of what happened when they would write!

Beautifully Penned with your poetic Ink EA

Hi Linda
My mother's great grandfather was a Burns.
He died in the civil war. They were from Scotland and also claimed some sort of kinship to Robert Burns.

Arctic Wind ~

Thank you for that very thoughtful response! It is much appreciated. You are so kind and I always enjoy your visits. I am also pleased that you appreciated my attempt at recreating what it must have been like for our classic poets in days of old writing by the light of a lantern. I wanted to recreate the atmosphere.

Ida ~

Fascinating! Thanks for sharing a bit of your 'Burn' history! Unlike you, I cannot claim even a drop of his poetic blood in my veins!

~ but he most assuredly played a part in my family history!   My ancestors erected a statue of Robert Burns in Edinburgh, Scotland. Now home for a host of pigeons, I dare say! lol

Love & Poet Burn's Light,

Linda
