Sally and Felix
are hanging at
their favorite bar,
up the street,
and around the corner.

Around eleven,
they decide
it’s time to go
on home.

They turn the corner,
and happen to notice
their oldest boy
hanging out
with a bunch
of other guys.

He’s supposed to be at home,
watching the younger kids.

Sally and Felix
don’t say a thing.

They just stare
a minute.

There’s nothing they
can really say,
or do.

They knew it would happen,
sooner or later.

It makes them sad.

They’ve lost their first one
to the streets.

Bobby

Passing shadows,

Yes, kids do have this annoying tendency to grow-up, and be their own people.

I'll never forget my wife's words when my youngest son went for an overnight sleep-over at his girl friend's house,

"We've lost him."

Bobby

He will come back, when He is cold , hungry, broke or all 3, then Felix & Sally need to sit him down and talk with Him..

John,

Isn't that the way it is though.  In the case of my son, he did come back from that one.  He's getting married next month to a lovely girl in New York City.  They are both PhD math professors.  They can spend their time discussing Euler's theorems.

My kids found their own way off the streets.

In the case of Sally and Felix's boy, talking won't work.  Once the street gets you, it's in your blood to stay.

For the most part I think you're absolutely right, Bobby though I hate to say it.

Secondhanddreampoet,

Thanks for the applause.  Yes they are hard truths.

Ida,

Possibly.  There are solutions to such dilemmas though.  Stay tuned.

Sigh. I am glad that Sally and Felix were good kids.

And my best wish to you son and may God Bless them and their marriage.  Ask them for me, when  1+1=1

Have a lovely weekend sir!

So the streets have such power?! But I do believe it is possible to come out of this "street fascination"!
Your words hold a grip of helplessness, but there can be a way out. It's again a problem of social policy, which should provide for alternatives.

Thank you dear Bobby for another thought provoking slice of your story.

Margherita,

There is nothing wrong with street people, or their society.  It's the way of life in the crowded cities of the northeast.  It's almost as much your family as blood relations.  I've always been in the street.  I'm comfortable there.
