What is the fate that awaits us
As we rush toward the Millennium?
Terrifying Apocalypse,
Or perhaps...
A new beginning?

Some fear the ancient prophesies,
Others take no heed,
False prophets beseech us to repent
With no concern save greed.

This gilded age has seen the best
And the worst of humanity.
You just might hear an angel sing
In the midst of this insanity.

As for myself, I am humbled
By the awesome power
That propels us ever forward
To this epoch's final hour.

A new age approaches
And it will not be denied
As our thoughts turn toward the time
When good and evil will collide
On the brink of that great, yawning abyss
                                 ....THE FUTURE

                                     Ida Werrett

I wrote this during all the millennium furor.

My friends and family humoured me and my antics as the New Millennium approached. I stock-piled packaged and canned food and water, had lots of batteries, flashlights, cordless everything, copied important computer files to disk ~ the list goes on. All this in spite of the fact that I truly did believe that we would get through it all unscathed! lol It was just some added insurance ~ for just in case I was wrong! lol

Your poem brought it all back!

May this millennium be a great one for you! ~ and for all of humanity.

Cute poem.

Amazing how foolish some people were about the millennium.  A millennium here and a millennium there, it hardly makes a difference in the infinity of time and space.

Bobby speaks the truth. I was in Alaska at the time. No stockpiling of anything in winter but firewoood, packages of Ramen noodle soups and canned fruit. I did fill my car's gas tank, just in case. In Alaska, we always lit our 4th of July fireworks at midnight NY eve, as it is light all night in July.

Thinking positive about the future. The only way it should be.

Powerfully expressed.

We don't know how it will be, but it will be. I believe in the future ... but we should begin to be more constructive and less destructive ...

effective 'write'!:

I am particularly fond of the ending:

"...our thoughts turn toward the time
When good and evil will collide
On the brink of that great, yawning abyss

....THE FUTURE"

Applause!!
