tears run like tributaries
etching their way through
the wrinkles
that contorted
with each excruciating
intake of breath

god her breathing
was so sharp

burying her head in my shoulder
my skin burned
it burned for everything
she ever stood for

then i walked away
before it hurt for me
to breathe

and so it still
grows
it still rips
at her flesh
and makes sure of itself

makes sure
of
itself

that the job gets done

a painful experience on every level.

I know...

you wrote it in reality...

yes, it's difficult, moreso for the people around the afflicted than the actual person with the cancer itself.
i'm really sorry to hear about your sister.  it's tough.  god bless.

Listening to every heart

Kate,

I know this story, very well.
But I also know in my heart
that my mother chose to go, because
she missed him so much.

Be that as it may, if you ever get
the opportunity to see

Wit

do so.

Your own words will come back to you.

Be well.

I read this earlier today and came here tonight specifically to respond to this poem.  I imagine that many of us have been through watching a loved one die of cancer.  I would love to think that I am wrong.  But, that is probably a hopeful wish on my part.  My father died in this way -- slowly, disappearing from mind and body.  You wrote this so well - I saved it to my library.  Thank you.

Alison
