rumor has it
he once tried out for the new york yankees

smooth shaven
strong legs bristling hairs
muscled arms
sweet fleshed youth
pitching a baseball
like any other youth

no
maybe it was the washington senators

either way
he was a baseball fan
we know that

he came off sierra maestra
just another baseball fan
another revolutionary
another youth
now with a beard
a gun
a dream

what was in his heart?

habana vieja
malecón avenue
running along the seawall
the northern shore
smell of seaweed
sea birds crying
lay in his heart

castillo del morro white shining
as no other castle

smell of cigar shops on calle obispo
clothes drying on balconies
in the fierce carribean sun
mamis walking fat babies
in shiny silver carriages
niños
tossing baseballs
like any other boys

that’s what lay in his heart

but
dreams
and revolutions always become governments
just governments

intelligence says
he is dying
u s naval ships prepare to surround his bed
just in case
god forbid
a youth that loves baseball should escape
in an inner tube
or a leaky rowboat

just another old man
breath wheezing past his beard
sparse
gray

rumor has it
he once tried out for the new york yankees
no
maybe it was the washington senators

either way
we know he loved baseball

patria o muerte
venceremos
fidel

motherland or death
either way
you have won

You do have a way of painting vivid poetry..
And yes, he did love baseball...

Well done Kate and much enjoyed!

For it was not into my ear you whispered
But into my heart..
It was not my lips you kissed
But my soul.

There is great technique and profound sensitivity mixed in this outstanding and  intelligent poetic offering, dear Lady.

The man has not lost his voice. He leaves no one indifferent.

My favorite part of your ponderings, sadly so true:

quote:
that’s what lay in his heart

but
dreams
and revolutions always become governments
just governments

Margherita
