.

Even when young
There seems a sense
Of spiraling down

Growing up
On streets in disrepair
Alleys paved with cinders from US Steel
Whose smoke for days along the shore
Palls the open sky

Each morning the fathers disappear
Driving to work in cars they bought as used
From lots that mingle with local bars
Selling beer and shots potato chips
And nothing more

No princes come in golden limousines
To claim their suffering drama queens
From those stupid churls they’re now wedded to
So nightly keening fills the air

And daughters learn how
To rule and keep control
Through invective scorn and ridicule

While sons mature into a stance
Less faith no hope or pretended chance
Of being happy

"A hell of a fat chance my orange bears had...."

My friend, Patchen would wish he had written this. Sometimes words you write are humbling, to one who knows well what it takes to produce verse of this quality. Well done.

See what I mean, folks? He'd have been proud to have written what John just did.
