(This is a song I just wrote that emotionally speaks of how autism remains a deepest, haunting mystery that affects an increasing number of children, and in result deep, painful misunderstandings persist that only further hurt them and leave them more vulnerable to bullying and social isolation and distrust!

This is one of my most emotional and darkest songs to date, so better have a hanky ready! God Bless all these angels! )

Autistic Child
By: Noah Eaton
2/2/07

I’ve heard this story,
of this autistic boy who,
preferred wearing girls clothes,
trying some on in a Nottingham changing room,
when his mother decided,
now that he was attending an inner city school,
he should keep his feminine wear for home,
and consider wearing new clothes in public…

…that’s when everything went pear-shaped,
throwing off all his clothes in anger,
running naked all around the shop…

…his mother carried him outside,
still overheated with emotion,
reduced to inconsolable tears…

.
My mom heard this story,
of this autistic girl who,
kept running away from home,
and brought back by neighbors through and through,
then one Christmas,
when her daddy was serving in the Falklands,
she overheard a phone conversation,
that he was with this new woman…

…she cried, “He’s nothing,
but the man who used to be my daddy!”,
throwing objects seemingly every day in rage…

..her mother felt like she needed,
a periscope strapped to her constantly,
just to make sure she was okay…
.
.
.
.
.
The mothers of both kids,
prayed for the world to be theirs,
unconditionally loving all their quirks,
can often feel so unfair…

My friend heard this story,
of this autistic boy who,
was able to say “Mama!” at nine months old,
but forgot how to speak her name way too soon,
then when his father,
went off to Iraq to serve a third tour,
in deep frustration,
his head hit the window sill,
and cracked his head open…

…she rushed to call an ambulance,
singing his favorite song to him,
just to try putting him emotionally at ease…

…he now needs Melatonin to sleep at night,
with his mother resting by his side,
just to make sure he was peacefully asleep…

"My Guardian Dear,
to whom God's love commits me here...

.
...ever this day be at my side,
to light, to love, and be my guide..."

Noah, I have worked with Autistic children in the past few years in the classroom, although the very young.
They each have all the emotions that any other child would have in any of those situations. They just can't express them outwardly the same way. There are so many degrees of Autism. Hopefully they will find some means of prevention and possibly a cure in the future.
