It is still fall in this northern land But winter’s cold will soon offer its brand Frosty fingers will kiss our cheeks pink The nights will be longer, the daylight will shrink For now the beavers swim in the stream Their work is steady with no time for dreams They’ll gnaw at trees until they cut them down Covering their homes with twigs that they found The birds have flown south before there is snow Life is slowing down and the seasonal silence grows I am busy building my woodpile tall I have split and stacked throughout the fall When the land is cold and the days are dark I’ll heat my home as my chimney sparks Into the night burning embers will fly Into the darkness they’ll light up the sky Like stars they will float high into the black And drift high towards the heavens to never come back The moose are now grazing and bedding in the trees They are eating the willows before the branches freeze Each step that they make is on frozen ground They move through the day with hardly a sound Only the dogs bark lets me know they are there We gaze at each other with no fear or real care They have their job to eat and take care of their young I have mine to split wood under the weak, waning sun It’s as if we smile and offer a simple “I wish you good day.” Then turn to our tasks knowing that this is no time to play Winter is coming and with it the ice and the snow The temperature can drop down to sixty below Animals and people have little time to visit and chat We are too busy working on our cold weather fat So if you see me all bundled up in my gear Don’t feel sorry for me – winter is why I am here. aziza |

I just love winters, but I gather yours will be longer and colder than mine in The Netherlands. We too have split the wood and piled it high to burn the stoves, as we don't have central heating in our house. Beautiful verse. Like scattered leaves...my words will flow |
