Sound Of Darkness
By Paul Wilson

Grab my hand he shouted …over the noise
made by the on rushing sound of darkness
I can’t reach the hand of rescue out stretched
trying to save me from death it’s hopeless

Try harder…try harder the voice repeats
as I am engulfed by the thought of when
Quickly… today becomes forty years past
and the man becomes a boy once again

Where is this place of green skies and blue grass
I now find myself a part of today
Suddenly I see old friends from my past
as they gaze at me and then run away

Wait…wait I shout I want to play again
like we use to before we had a care
I’m trying to run and catch up with them
but sadly I’m not going anywhere

I hear that voice again calling to me
grab my hand hold on you will be okay
Don’t give up he says as he reaches out
to me the sound of darkness fades away

Our fingers touch for just a second then
I’m pulled away by yesterday’s embrace
There alone in the darkness stands a boy
with tears streaming down his innocent face

I walk over to him my arms outstretched
then I realize this young boy is me
The yesterday and tomorrow of me
embrace and both of us now become free

I had to let the boy in me go free
to become the man I’m suppose to be
Age of Aquarius has come and gone
the sound of darkness no longer scares me

Paul
A very interesting poem, I like how the "sound" is heard and seen from different angles.

I read this a sort of dream, picture the set with a fog rolling in and out of the darkness, with boyhood spirits drifting in the mist...and you a sort of male Alice trying to refind Oz.

"Where is this place of green skies and blue grass
I now find myself a part of today
Suddenly I see old friends from my past
as they gaze at me and then run away"

I enjoyed the entire poem...

Ford...That's exactly how I started it out, sort of as a dream scene, then it evolved into a reality thing of growing up and having to become a man very early in life even thou he wanted to stay a boy.
Thanks for your insight and for taking time to read and reply...Paul

Karen...Wise words in your reply. I guess we would all like to remain children without a care in the world, but sooner or later we have to grow up and let go of our youth but we can always fall back on the memories we created back then. I remember walking home sometime after dark and I would keep looking behind me into the darkness because I thought I was being followed by someone or something but there was never anything there except darkness and the sounds I thought I heard...Paul

I'll be around Friday & Sunday so if you see me on the street I expect a big hello from you.
