Laying on the nightstand
300 dollars
rolled real tight
rubber banded
left for me

I knew what it was for
I did my job well
Kids have to be fed
Lights have to be on

He rolled over
stale with cigarette smoke
coughing up a lung

smiling gratefully
he scratched his belly
grabbed the remote with contentment

finally when the commercials ran
he looked up at me
my hair mussed
eyes tired
glittered with perfume
and asked me what he should have asked from the start

“how was work tonight, hun?”

looking down at my ring
I laughed a little and responded…

“About as good as it gets for a bartender dear…”
