gnawed by walls of slicing rain & wind again
hiding in the parapet of my husband’s belly
will mind rooms of staples bite their flesh?
drowning in the smugness of traditional taps
of a category 4 slamming 145 mph winds
into french quarter rooms
while licking the halls of sad fearful eyes
roaming the broken bones of courtyards
who’d have ever thought, this wilderness would
become a city of sea fits & storm surges feared
sewn perfectly and buttoned up in some dog trench
with sullen astro turfed chairs
fate blowing into paper bags, again,
while we all
drop lover’s kisses into cobalt jars,
sealing them tight
biting down nails of uncertainty…
raising crucifixes up to god
enabling some clandestine jaws of life
while
starring into walls of fox frames
facing silently the night
as katrina pushes onward
facing a day that screams
“ please fast forward!”
i imagine sea grass screeching great muscle
while holy water splashes the
all dark swellings of dreaded groupings
into wee hours of morning’s
with loneliness and homeless men,
being eaten alive by mosquito’s betrayal
when barbed wire sits down to feast
on river roots of wild faces
galloping horses of falling skyscrapers
animating ground zero out the side door of
motels, restaurants and b&b’s
exploding glass of restless souls
while new orleans becomes vulnerable
waiting silent, for some down town, distant eye
to emerge and bring a drying sun home

we can only wait hope & pray

Katrina has pushed your talent to incredible heights, dear Lee.
Impressive poem, the fragility and the fear is intensely felt and as usual there are many masterful lines here.

Sigh!

LeeJ

I had a dream of naked people laying on anything that was available above water, and the mosquitos were swarming.  And it felt like I didn't sleep at all, but I must have.  This is an incredible poem!

Sometimes I think
our imaginations
can be just as mighty
as any storm...

and sometimes,
just sometimes,
we can walk away.

Excellent portrayal
of a very angry lady...

No one could phrase our angst at the coming misery any better.  Well done!  Ken

Through rubble and trouble and dark of night
The yawn of a dawn will hasten the light

Written from one with a big heart.  It was quite the ride and I am sure there are so many wish they had not taken it.

Many many thanks to you all, for reading and commenting...this one, had me very afraid, for all those people, and now I'm wondering about Toerag and if he is safe.  I tell you true, I was extremely concerned for the lives of those people packed in the super dome....thank God no one there was hurt, now this morning to find out there were deaths, I believe I heard 30? One can only wonder how Karen and her family are doing....what they are presently going thru, thinking about friends/neighbors who might have stayed behind, with no way of contacting them. Wondering if their home is still standing?

Thank you all, very kindly for your heartfelt wishes for these people...God bless the families who have lost loved ones...it seems to be so cruel and heart breaking.
