In The Cool Of The Evening

In the cool of the evening
I was writing just to let you know
that I can't help it, but my feelings have grown
fragile in the lonely pinnacle of my blue sundown
glittering shards of maple leaves blown all around
twelve bucks a night at the roadside rundown motel
fourteen miles southeast of Cleveland, and it's cold as hell

In the cool of the evening
where I finally fell deep into a dream of you
a dream I forgot to dream still lived inside me
painted red and white, priced like brand new
shimmering in her eyes like diamonds and stars
like streaming rainy streetlights and tail lights of cars
that race the freeway like an aquatic speedway
fifity-three miles north of where your golden body lay

Love keeps me guessing
looking for a blessing
in the blue ballpoint letters she wrote to me
she keeps me stable
counting on a fable
where I can get back and lose myself in she

In the cool of the evening
dusk left its ember impression on my skin
my car radio is talking back to me again
telling me to get back to you already
finish that letter and hold yourself steady
tonight's another full moon night
the morning's another hangover fright
the light of the sun bleaching my bones to white

Life keeps me busy
running around dizzy
from the black asphalt running under me
she keeps me together
in all kinds of weather
till I can get back and lose myself in she

A freeway love I forgot to love
still living inside me
but I wish you were here in the mirror
instead of this fuzzy reflection of me
and...

In the cooling of this love
like a pie on the windowsill
under wide open violet skies above
I'm determined to make it back to you still
and if I turn the corner on Sullivan street
will you see me from your porch and run to me
or will there be a for sale sign on your lawn
saying you're long gone, so gone, gone
in that case...

Love, let's keep me away
turn down 16th & Wabash way
destination: another freeway love for me
she's probably moved on
and so I'm writing this song
till I can get to a new girl and lose myself in she

Another dream I forgot to dream
still lives inside me
this is my company here,
in the cool of the evening

Another dream I forgot to dream
still lives inside me
this is my company here,
in the cool of the evening

beautiful, even in its sadness....

In your light I learn how to love
In your beauty how to make poems
You dance inside my chest where
no one sees you and that sight becomes this art

'Another dream I forgot to dream
still lives inside me'

Oh ... how very much I like that thought~
To sleep ... perchance to dream the leftover dreams~

Something tugs at me, I've no doubt of that.
Something from the sea, whichever one I'm near.
When I stray too far from beachland, it calls me back
