The summer had passed away
Autumn frosted the pumpkins with white
And trees danced in naked sway
The cold became deeper each night.
The season’s change chill the toes
Bringing out the heavier coats to wear,
Leather to block the wind that blows
Stirring the November air.
I would walk by the waterside
In the grayness of the twilight
Till the world the dark would hide
Returning home in the deep of night.

Oh how well I remember that night in mid November
With red chilled face walking along that place
Finding a young woman freezing on a grate
No coat or shoes to wear and lost without care
Everyone willing to allow her to that fate.

I went into a store where I’d never been before
And bought a coat to warm then shoes and socks
Just simple sneakers not much against the winter
At least some protection from cold and rocks
I went and set them down before her.

Turning and walking quickly away
I didn’t give her a chance to refuse them
And since I had no cheerful words to say,
Left the cold night to some warmth to stay in.
I didn’t see her on my next walk
I hope she found a place out of the air
Other than the grating in the park
To stay at during the deep of winter.
I saw that coat twice in December
Then on a early January day,
It was her I think the coat I remember,
Where she went I couldn’t say.

Wonderful Professor. So grateful that you allowed us to learn abit more about the lady in the cold. I am intrigued and would love to hear more - maybe..hmmm?
Your writing is delicious. hugs, Chris
