(An old, strip mine, Morris Run, Pennsylvania)

Often, as is the case
When surrounded by nature-
Adversely possessed,
I am
Caught in snares of dark thought
Dangling vertical
Upside, peering down
At the results of laws
That protected industrialist;
On old destructive quests;

It becomes hard to write of beauty,
When what is seen has been made ugly;
But my ink needs flow of promises
I watch rising from the ashes,
That effectively caused such darkness...

I see from the noose,
How trout lilies spring,
Refleshing the *bone pile,
How
Aspen seeds sprout
From the poisonous *red dog!

And faith cuts me down...

My shaking hand steadies,
Tourettes controlled;
Calmed by mothers
Reverdent ability,
To rebrighten the shadows,
With light that was stole.

*"bone pile"..
strip mine term for the binder of hard               rock on top of the coal seam.

*red dog...
sulfur crusted shale rock found in the cut, very low p.h., containing many different poisons.

You paint the vision so well - your message is loud and clear and well received - your voice is heard - thank you for speaking-

Very, very powerful write, Ford.  This belongs at the top.  This is where my reading stops.  You have me wondering what poisons that snarl within my reach.  Very powerful indeed.

"It becomes hard to write of beauty,

When I read this, it was as if it had just slipped from my own tongue.
Always, you nail it. Shaking, tourette's, eh? Hmm, enabling one to blurt out reality, uninhibited.

I tried, last night, to leave a response. But this poem stripped away my words, and left me as bare as skeletal images you left behind. When need outweighs production - and when the earth cannot replenish itself with the materials man believe he requires, he'd best imagine other ways to survive...

oh wait. He has...but it just takes a bit more ingenuity and less corporate manipulation to say, "solar power is just one other way..."

...but what was science fiction so many years ago does seem to weave its way into our lives over and over again, so the believers, dreamers and doers will eventually take over, Ford. For they are the ones with the clear, pure thoughts that yes, man CAN make life better...

excuse my ramble.

The poets who leave pondering behind always draw a crowd.

Faith has cut me down from the gallows of despair many times, your kind responses are like that, they give me hope..The knowledge that one is not alone with their thoughts of what is real and valuable, makes the reciever of comments such as these, a rich man....

Thank you , poet friends , for these replies...

Ford

If more looked beyond the surface of things, like you, the earth would have more of a chance.  Thank you for writing this.

Ice,

I have no words - I can see this in nature, I see this in my own life - its hope

Thanks for sharing what you think about.
