View through the rose tinted glass of childhood.

Waking up in the early morning
To the noises of roosting pigeons
and an old man shaving
Ahh I see your finally up” he says
as he scrapes off those hard grey whiskers,
the sun plants a pattern of stars on the roll down blind,
breakfast is just fifteen minutes away
as he dries the cups and saucers
remnants of last nights supper.

The kettle boils
and soon the pot simmers on the side
the tea swirled to a vortex with a spoon
a cup and saucer always find their way up stairs
and sit upon the bedside table
waiting for an old woman to wake.

Dancing blue flames lick
a slice of bread crisp black
a spread of salty butter and tangy marmalade
lies on that taste and fulfils.

He wanders in the garden
amongst the dew laden grass
watering his plants from an old white sink.

Bread, the remnants of an old loaf
are scattered for the birds
and they flock here and there
fighting for these scraps
carrying them off into the trees.

Andrew

Andrew...these are your strongest lines...
these are the ones that speak to the heart...

and if these are your memories?

You're one lucky young man!

Andrew,
you have no idea how much I enjoyed this
poem...it brings back so many memories of
my own childhood,  the sounds I heard and
things I saw...the smells,  tastes....the
coffee that steamed in a cup as a spoon
clinked rythmically...and so much more..

Thanx for the share...

Sunshine: These are actual memories of my child-hood; I used to occasionally stay with my Grandparents on a weekend so that my parents could work extra hours. Unfortunately I lost my Grandfather to cancer at the beginning of the year but I like to think back about those special days that we had spent together, especially those in my childhood. Thank you for the reply

Magnus: I’m glad that you enjoyed the read, I was thinking that it was funny that some of my fondest memories were of the small mundane things though I am glad that I am not alone in that respect. Thank you for replying

Enchantress: Thank you for your kind words, I am not sure that it is my best writing but it is certainly a piece that means the most to me.

passing shadows: Thank you for your reply

Martie: Thank you for your kind words
