Watching the bottom feeders
Move about the tank as if
They never knew the surface
Never understood the top of the tank

She walks along the city streets
Head down, no where to go
Hangs out with bottom feeders,
That’s all she knows

He sits in a 5th avenue tower
Shouting commands and insults
Firing people with the snap of a finger
But not without good reasons, mind you

She picks up a cast away newspaper
Sits on the bench to read
Next to the old man with holes in his shoes
And a friendly smile

It’s another day in paradise
It’s another opportunity to melt the ice
Between the gaze of those
Who spend their days and nights on the streets

He leaves the tower for a midnight stroll
Walks silently past those on the dole
They don’t exist for the power man
For they have nothing that smells of money,

Though they may smell rich
‘tis not the green stuff that makes a pocket itch
and so, they don’t exist.
(Though God saw them on the street that day)

It’s Thanksgiving, and the next stranger you meet
May be living on the street,
So count your blessings if you are on your way
To a warm cozy home and a dinner to eat.

And which line would you be standing in
come Thursday
And which one on Friday morning
Consider them both . . .
And wonder why they are

Thoughtful piece, Kacy

Happy Thanksgiving, m'friend. I will be out at a horse barn all day Thursday, with my daughter. The rest of the gang will be 'home' for the day.  But I'm thankful that I will have another opportunity to say thanks for what I do have, and to help my daughter feed and care for some beautiful creatures. And Friday? I'll be donating a few hours to a local non-profit.
thanks for the visit, e, and hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving.

yes, 'twas stuffing and sweet taters,  cranberry-orange relish, pecan pie, coffee, wine, and good company

and at least one turkey is still smiling

Ya know, Kacy, I was thinking along the same lines just recently, and before.  I enjoyed this compassionate write, and always appreciate the way you think!

"Have you seen the old man
In the closed down market
Kicking up the papers with his worn out shoes
In his eyes you see no pride
And held loosely at his side
Yesterday's paper, telling yesterday's news"

I'm sure you know Ralph McTell's great "Streets of London".

Always good to hear your thoughts, Kacy.  Ken

Actually, I'm not familiar with that one Ken, but it has a similar feel to part of what I wrote.
And thanks for reading Dixie, and JL.
