Oregonian Thanksgiving
By: Noah Eaton
11/25/04

Yay, it’s so great to be back,
To reunite with all our loved ones on this day,
A day where we’re free to catch up on life,
Thanksgiving is what they name this holiday,
I don't particularly enjoy this holiday's historical relevance,
In the manner our natives were treated under strife,
So I rather like to call this day Happy Loved Ones Togetherness Day,
In honoring and defending my heritage and their rights...

Wow, did you see the footage,
Of Mount Saint Helen’s erupting?
Perhaps you remember that magnitude 5.1 earthquake,
Causing that huge eruption of ash back on May 18, 1980?
Well, this July and August I got to witness,
A whole new series of bursts of steam,
Rushing out of the heart of this volcano,
Overlooking Washington’s South Fork Toutle valley...

We wouldn't say we're happy about Bush being re-elected,
We feel things will get worse before they get better,
The war will go on, our schools short of money,
The Cascades and the Siskiyou forests are in danger,
Yet we remind ourselves to keep a positive mental attitude,
Remind ourselves we’ve already made it through four years,
Pray this war ends as soon as possible and our troops come home,
So they can live on with their loved ones, friends and peers...

Besides, it’s a great time to be alive,
For a Portland progressive pleistoscene hippy like me,
I was blessed to co-lead a big rally last month,
Drawing nearly ten thousand devotees,
We had teachers, firefighters, children,
Veterans dating back all the way to Vietnam,
Surrounded by many other concerned citizens,
Who courageously spoke out how this war is wrong...

It's these small examples that make me smile,
these symbolic acts that fill my heart with hope,
that we're all in this together,
we're all together in this same boat,
so today I offer thanks to all of those,
who join and share my concerns,
and even to those whose views differ from mine,
I always will offer an angel friendship hug, warm and tender...

I became vegetarian on New Years Day,
But I always love those cranberries and yams,
Chex Mix, pumpkin pie, egg nog lattes,
And hemp granola squares flavored with fruit and vanilla extract,
I’ve never been a football fan,
And may never come to understand the craze,
But it doesn’t mean I don’t enjoy to play,
A nice traditional family board game!

Actually, we don’t even have a professional football team here,
All we’ve got are those Trail Blazers,
In fact, the only pro sports team I really watch are the Avalanche,
God, you’ve got to love the moves of Peter Forsberg!
But it doesn’t mean we Oregonians don’t know how to have fun,
We got the ocean to the west and the mountains to the east,
We’ve got the largest weekend market in the nation,
The Rose Festival, Crater Lake and an entire shoreline of public beach...

You know what they used to say,
"Not what we say about our blessings,
but how we use them,
is the true measure of our thanksgiving."
So let us acknowledge our dependence to each other,
Recognize each other as one great American family,
And celebrate life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness,
As friends and loved ones on this Thanksgiving!

Love,
Noah Eaton

Noah .... How I love your writing and enjoy seeing life through your eyes.

Every day should be a day of 'thanks and giving.'

All things come around, Noah.  We, as a/an US, take all, good, bad, ugly...because we have the hope of an angel, at times, and the hope of lives lived, at other times...

I applaud your youth, I look toward your future, remembering my own, looking forward to even more...

We have seen so many mature here in various ways, at PiP, these last few years...

Here's to a new year, a new promise, a new life, and new hope...for you, your friends, family, and all of those at PiP...who believe enough to take tomorrow as it comes.

P.S. - you're well on your way to being a class act, and this, I know, from experience.

Hemp granola squares? LOL
Happy Thanksgiving, Noah.
I spent part of the morning rebuilding a divider wall in a horse stall, after a pissed-off mare kicked down the wall. Lots of fun, LOL. But a 'barn' friend made dinner, stuffing, fruit salad, taters, green bean casserole, home made cranberry-orange relish and pies...delicious! BTW, welcome to the diet lifestyle. I've eaten a vegetarian diet for 20 years, and never have trouble finding plenty of goodies to eat.
Anyway, have a great holiday season, maybe I'll bump into you at Powell's bookstore someday? My last visit there (last weekend) I spent nearly two hours just in the 'purple' room. LOL, I never have made it through that whole store yet.

Noah,
Glad you had a good holiday! The saturday market is a lot of fun... but I swear I get sick every time I eat the elephant ears there. So good, but stay away! Oh hey, have you ever been to the Hollywood Theatre? There's someone there you should meet.

Midnightsun,
I was just at powell's 2 weeks ago. Had my father drop me off there while he went to Powell's technical bookstore. I could spend all day there, but I get lost every time. It's a great place to buy Christmas presents, which my family probably gets sick of. Last time I spent all my time on the very top floor, rare books, whichever color that is. Pink, I think. I've lived near there, in WA, all my life, and I still haven't made it through the whole store lol

Always, Alyssa

Noah, you are wonderfully unique, charming and downright special!

I always enjoy reading the thoughts you share with us. You are open and honest and speak from your angel heart.

"Happy Loved Ones Togetherness Day" ~ This made me smile!

I agree with you that we are all together in the same boat ~ and we should work together to keep that boat afloat! lol

Our Canadian "Happy Loved Ones Togetherness Day" (lol) was in October, so my mouth started watering when you mentioned some of those delicious goodies! Yummy in the tummy! Actually, I'm presently shrinking mine on a die-et! Oh, the price we have to pay for beauty! ~ and good health!!

That is an incredible feat being co-lead of a rally of 10,000 people! You certainly do walk your talk! Amazing! ~ and congratulations.

Oregon sounds fabulous! ~ God's country! You make one fine spokesperson!

That is a wonderful saying: "Not what we say about our blessings, but how we use them, is the true measure of our thanksgiving."

Blessings to the sweetest and most adorable hippy I know,

Love & Light,
Linda
