Ol’ Scratch’s eyes
set deep and alight beneath his cowl
with Sapphire and Jaspar

Are, at a glance, uncanny
but, when examined, are revealed to be
perfectly, wholly, exactly
and nothing less than “canny” defined

His robes too
are not cut from ordinary cloth

They appear the color and texture of shadow
neither reflecting, nor absorbing
both everything, and nothing at all

They seem voluminous enough
to hold a single man
and keep him in context against the cosmos

This is what you see, all that you see
when you look too hard, or too long
into his ubiquitous, wavering form

For some hint, a clue as to what mechanics
might compel his method of selection

A practice I never imagined to be random
or the product of a celestial lottery

I understand the taking of those
whose last grain has finally fallen onto the heap
of days gone by at the hourglass’ bottom

As well as those, like myself, like so many of us
who have, in their life, done a thing or two
to hasten his visit

It’s the young I wonder about, and the innocent

And if Ol’ Scratch has the sight enabling him
to look deeply into a life, and with compassion
gather that life within the folds of his cloak

Sparing it from what only he can see
or preempting a young soul from a process
that it could not possibly bear

Or does he simply collect them
when they are judged to be complete
and pick them at the moment of their perfection

Ol' Scratch likes to pick 'em ripe. From the moment they develop a conscience. He encourages the mad dash from our common roots and like a cuttin' horse isolates his subjects.

He discourages Jungs' "collective subconscious" and promotes the shame and guilt of mans' counscious awareness.

Good write.

Ed, this is so, so true. It's so hard to
understanding the reasoning of the why of
who's chosen at a given time. and, it seems
that there simply HAS to be a reasoning?
Good to read you again, my friend.
Hugs,
Ethel

The book keeps using analogies of fishing and harvesting grain.... but I think it's really more like picking fruit -- best first.
