The paths are smoothed out,
rocks tumbled over to the side

no traffic, the lights weren’t against me
the rain had stopped--

I slack off to fifteen miles an hour
by the time I leave the city limits

turn on the Old Fork Road;
the corn is high.

The postal flag is down, the sun is up,
I walk in the front door half expecting
to smell bacon, Folgers--

The chairs are covered in white,
the notice on the door, "For Sale"

turning, no tears really, simply
glad I kept the car running.  Maybe
I wanted one more look at what I loved.

It was at that moment, I knew
I’d not return to the old homestead

Because, sometimes,
as hard as one tries,
you simply cannot go home again.

Truth, rewritten, still stands
as truth.
You can visit
but you can't return.

Well done, Penny.

Thanks for the kind reply, b/c I know this is hopelessly cliche!

For some reason the Old Fork Road sounds familiar to me! Very well done Penny.

somehow, I do believe inside, this had a duel message?  I dunno, but what I do know is this was quit bittersweet and well written.  Thank you

I guess my message was inspired by change and family illness. Sometimes people read from their own perspective and that can be a good thing, I guess.  Thank you so much for reading!
