I saw a hard blink from a lizard’s eye
Cracking a joke about the third world
That no one speaks of
Where young men hold each other
Up against the darkness
Burning the arms of glowing cheeks
And no one speaks of…cheap social lies
But back their sides of monumental eyes

Darkness means nothing to them
They cannot bear to pray
To white bleating lambs
Or understand their fragility
Or their own

Holding mankind by the throat
While the widow weeps
Insanity rests like a contaminated imminence
Tough bargaining, easy violence
Splintering democracy with homespun asylums
Why would half naked wartime leaders
Maneuver decisions with self-inflicted diarrhea?
Posing like rotting flesh
Eyes dead

Plucking the child’s dreams from their sleep
Selling them to the killing fields
And no one speaks or carries him to his crib
Window frames sell photographs
While children bleed memory blackouts
Broken glass panics when torn
And the lessons learned are none
From infectious dragons
Burning the streets or any foothold
Breathing peace is massacred
To the bitter depths of shame

Retaliation is a little man
Pouring smoke into the lungs of Buddha
Whose the adult, and whose the child
On Sunday Morning?

So very much said, so powerfully. I enjoyed this, thank you.

Window frames sell photographs

~*~

every line was, is a keeper
when one wants to remember the absurdity
of war...

and yet, no one man will look at history
and keep it to them, some say,
all in the name of religion.

Well done, Lee.  An excellent voice of how it is.

Lee,
What a realistic picture you paint!  Every line of this can is meticuluously brushed.
Enjoyed your poem very much, but wish the world were in a better situation...  I had a very good "70s friend that used to tell me, "There are no problems in the world, just solutions out of place."  Now we just have to get everyone to work at the same time
on the solution, to clear their heads and start on that puzzle again.
