a lion rested
in tall grass
while cool sun-down air
shuffled through
the shiny tufts of green

the villagefolk were scared

there was a lion
at the forest’s edge
waiting for the sun to sink
down into the waiting arms
of the smoky distant hill
biding his time
waiting for dinner
to be served

soon it was dark
and the doors were shut tightly
and without exception

inside,
each family was
in a tight embrace

children were not allowed to cry
and mothers,
they couldn’t sing lullabies

outside,
the King moved about freely
first through the breadth
and then the length
and then the perimeter
of the village

with time, he became restless
and to relieve his boredom
he released a tiny roar
a small shrieky tremble
nothing like
a rumbling thunderous one
that builds the appetite
of a born-to-be-leader

but that was enough for
a couple of young ones to
let out shrill cries
and the mothers couldn’t resist
singing sweet spring songs
of happier times
till the small voices dropped

the songs relaxed the lion
and he took a nice long nap,
as if he hadn’t slept well
for years

just before the break of dawn
he left, letting out a quiet yawn
that restful satisfaction brings

he had come just to listen
to a mother sing sweet songs
to her young one

he missed his mother

oh what a wonderful piece! Reminds me of the Lion King movies.

To bring emotion to an animal...a very touching stir in my heart
