There's a cowboy who's thinking of you tonight, dear-
Sitting and looking at stars gleaming clear.....
Don't know what you're doing, don't know where you are-
Do you dance in some ballroom, or drink in some bar?
I thought you were happy, as I was, my dear
Content with the beauty we have around here.
The bluebonnets swaying before the spring breeze
The white tails a feeding beneath post oak trees.
I thought we would raise us a houseful of kids-
Till for your attention, the world made it's bid.
The bright lights of Dallas did beckon you on-
I rode in one evening and found you were gone.
I'll never forget when I found your short note-
Nor how bad it hurt me to read what you wrote-
You said, "John, I am sorry...this place is so dead,
I'm about to go crazy; I'm leaving instead.
While you were out working, late into the nights-
I sat on the porch steps, and stared at the lights."
A year's drug by slowly, almost to the day-
Since the bright lights of Dallas, did call you away...
So now we've changed places, I sit late at night-
And thinking of you, dear; I stare at the lights.
I thought love sufficient, your longings to stay-
But the bright lights of Dallas, have stole you away

read like an old western tune to me.great imagery with the deer and texas fauna contrasting with the city lights and of course visions of both the goodtimes and the sadness of realization and lonliness.just plain good writing, moved me.

Live like it's your last day...
Dance like nobody's watching...
Love like you've never been hurt...

Well done, cowboy poet. Far better than the usual cryin tune, LOL, including the one I wrote. The bright lights of Dallas have probably ended lots of quiet country romances.
