Tis the time again
to watch the evening news
To see the scramble.

Or, if in procrastination
to take the gamble
that by 11:59
you won’t become unglued.

Past procrastinators were we
Until we got choice of teletax;
Last year, 4-15, sittin’ fine,
Waiting on the end of the tele-line
‘til we erred, running out of time.

Again, a night at the races!
He grabbed the keys,
I grabbed the pencil,
envelope, important forms.

On our country route
Few cars did we see
That is, until 11:53.
Then a cavalcade came from no where
Turned on, as if poured
From a spout.

The traffic entombed the shut down town
From all streets leading to the post office.
Road construction and two stop lights
With two minutes to go, would the time suffice?

11:58, a brick building lay, but dark.
11:59 what’s that in the lot of the park?
Grocery carts?
Sure enough, our persons in blue
Were collectin’ those taxes in grocery carts
As fast as their  hands could grab.

11:59…
we made it with our grins beaded in sweat,
then walked across the street
to get a whistle’s wet
while in amusement, watching the clock strike
Twelve.

(This custom has become a yearly event.   Alhough we had our taxes finished in January this year,
we’re going to mail them tomorrow to keep with tradition! (Really, I forgot to send them!) We’ll celebrate across the street with ice cream as we watch the madness.    If you haven’t done the Cinderella thing, it is a riot to be a little mouse in the background.  It would be portrait artist’s dream to capture all the facial expressions, especially the expression of relief!)

Normally we finish ours no later than mid-Febuary but this year - and we had nothing unusual, we just barely had it done by the 11th hour... go figure!

Thank Heaven for Turbo Tax.  This was a fun read.
