Crow On The Pier

Beak draggled open, slack,
yellow crow eyes gone to red
from the poison of salt.

King of prairies, he’s nothing here
as one gull, bolder than the rest
edges closer, ventures a peck.

He tries to fly but the black wings
fold unwilling and he falls, tries to recover
as a wave comes up to take him.

Limp from shock he goes still
hardly struggling even as the gulls,
all business now, wheel in to feed.

Extremely good. How did you get the idea? Beautiful empathy with the animal.

I have viewed this scene, which maybe I've accepted as commonplace, until now...we do that in our day to day lives. You have a way of noticing a special moment and bringing to it a precise point.  I like reading it.  ~K~
p.s. I LOVE crows

These thing go on constantly, I am glad you were there to witness, and jotted your view of it down..harsh reality, but there is poetry in tragedy, as you so well demonstrate here..enjoyed

You've accomplished what I thought was impossible... left me aching with empathy for... a crow. *S* Even this former farmer girl feels for one outnumbered and doomed to die out of his element.
Your pen paints a striking picture, my friend... You see... and remind us how many times we see similar situations.
Excellent work... yes! *S*

Oh, that's so awful. I'm nearly in tears, and what can I do? I'm not there.

I never thought I'd find myself feeling sorry for a crow....

Ed - This is really great writing.  I could see everything in detail.  Beautiful writing.  The King of the Prairie line was perfectly composed.

In too late to answer everybody but...you are absolutely right Sy...

and Michelle, I have seen that from all angles -- so very true!

Lessee...Long John...that's three truths in a row -- that line was the reason for this poem...the first one I wrote, and the center of it.

Ohhhh Maaarrrgggeee..... What is it they say -- He who would make a pun would pique a poet?  Something like that....

And everybody, thanks for taking time to share an experience that doesn't get easier to see, with repetition.

(big angel hugs) It's sad that "nature's way" has to be savage sometimes, as I love all living things and crows are just as special as any one of God's creatures! (sigh) You write of this so very well, sweet friend, God Bless You, we all love you so much! You have such a beautiful heart, sweet Ed, thank you for sharing!

May love and light always shine upon you!
