Please forgive me for posting three poems in one day.
I promise you this is the last one.

Just like the Space Shuttle Columbia, I will never forget
when the Space Shuttle Challenger, exploded just moments
after take off. Taking the lives of all seven astronauts on board.

The seventeenth anniversary of that terrible tragedy
was just a few days ago, on January 28.

I remember a friend of mine, bringing a TV to work, so that
we could watch it. This mission was of significant importance
because of Christa McAuliffe, a New Hampshire teacher, and
the first Space Shuttle passenger/observer participating in the
NASA Teacher in Space Program. She had planned to teach
planned lessons, during live television transmissions.

After the Columbia accident last year. I felt compelled to
write something that honored all of the brave people that
perished. And all the people who were involved, in two
of the most devastating events, in the history of mankind.

Later that day, on January 28, 1986, then president
Ronald S. Reagan addressed a nation in mourning,
and ended his speech, with these words:

“We will never forget them, nor the last time we saw them,
this morning, as they prepared for the journey and waved goodbye
and 'slipped the surly bonds of earth' to 'touch the face of God.“

Twilight’s Last Gleaming

Under rocket’s red glare as a whole country stared
Our dear Challenger crew, carried on their pursuit
As their lives burst in air, a sight so hard to bare
It was proof through the day, all the sorrow we shared

Now by dawn’s early light, thro’ their perilous flight
We all waited to hail, Columbia back from the night
With a nation’s sad heart now as blue as the sky
We watched as their valor streamed out of our sight

Yes our flag is still here, and her broad stripes still wave
We’re the land of the free and the home of the brave
We can never forget all the sacrifice made
Our star spangled sky, shines with all that they gave

Ricky,
I remember see this live while I was at home with a new born infant.  I've never felt heights and depths of emotion pass through my body so quickly.  Thank you for remembering them in your fine write.

Very beautiful tribute.

That was tough!

Strong and yet fragile we are ...

(big angel hugs) God Bless You, sweet friend, I was only a baby boy when that tragedy occurred, but when I see the video of that disaster it feels just like yesterday! (sad sigh) This is very compassionately written, sweet friend, my heart goes out to all the families who lost their loved ones there, we all love you so much! You have such a beautiful heart, sweet Richy, thank you for sharing!

May love and light always shine upon you!

Love,
Noah Eaton

Chilling tribute, Richy....very, very good.  Anything Red, White, and Blue, Nation-inspired, Tragedy or Triumph, makes me weep with pride, compassion and sheer happiness to stand on this soil.
