Geppetto’s Flute

is a hummingbird holding up the sky
with wings

and I can hear the sound
but it is a whirr, and not quite the same

or

the whistle of a star falling, but more

it is as fine
as hair of silk brushed until it sparks
into the sound of a thousand fireflies exploding

also it is an answer
to a question I know I’ve asked before
and can no longer remember

and the important thing is

after the sound is gone
the sound remains

that’s Geppetto’s flute.

You make me hear it, lass. You absolutely show my ears the sound. Amazing way you have of doing that, simply amazing.

Good golly Ms. Martie, I sure like this poem....:-)
I hear Ghepettos flute all the time, yet my ears seem to be the only one around me that hear that music...but then again I am the only one that hears the Aeolian harp even with the window closed, and by reading this poem, I know you do too.

"And ever, if you hearken well,
You still may hear its vesper bell,
And tread of high-souled men go by,
Their thoughts conversing with the sky."
(H.D.Thoreau "The Aeolian Harp")

I keep being puzzled....just when I think I've got it, understand how you do this, you surprise me again, send me back to openers.

Somehow you capture the emotional range behind the scene and make it the foreground using imagery that is wholly unrelated except by those emotional qualities...help us see and feel the scene through things that aren't part of it, but are utterly vital once they're revealed.... none of which makes sense...back to openers!

Man I like this stuff of yours! There, I got it!

Just read that again and almost felt that little shock then realized yes, that is it!  Somehow you seem to capture that space between the time you read it, and your brain actually transmits the pictures to your mind to unravel, where you hide and vividly paint those words with sound, smell, or soul like no other.  I will try not to harp on this but, if you were in bookstores, I would buy them all!  Martie, Martie, you are sure my absolute favorite (along with our Elizabeth S, and Elizabeth B-B that is.)

That doesn’t surprise me Marite.

What music wouldn’t want to resonate
inside your heart forever?

If ever the sound of music, need be
described into words...

One would only have to recite
one of your lovely poems...

Very much, I liked your Geppetto's Flute. Even though I do not know him (her) nor have I enjoyed his music, thanks to your work with this poem I feel I have experienced Geppetto's music first hand. The line "it is as fine as hair of silk brushed until it sparks into the sound of a thousand fireflies exploding," is very descriptive yet has economy of words. It is a kaleidoscope on a Ferris wheel. The imagery is more than great!
